How to add synonyms and keywords?

There are two ways to expand search relevance: add synonyms to a specific product/category, or create a global synonym row for the whole store.

Method 1: Per product or category

Suitable when you need to improve the discoverability of a specific product — for example, adding a key phrase that isn't a direct synonym but an associative query.

Where to configure it?

Search Settings → Relevance

How to add to a product?

  1. Go to: Search Settings → Relevance

Relevance section

  1. Select the "Products" tab
  2. Find the product you need via search or category filter
  3. Click the edit icon next to the product
  4. In the modal, choose a language (Ukrainian or Russian)
  5. In the "Synonyms" field, enter a word → press Enter
  6. In the "Keywords" field, enter a word → press Enter
  7. Click "Edit" to save

Modal for adding synonyms

Important

After entering each word/phrase, make sure to press Enter — only then is the word added as a tag. If you click "Edit" without pressing Enter, the last word you typed won't be saved.

How to add to a category?

The flow is identical — just select the "Categories" tab instead of "Products" at the start.

For multilingual sites

Synonyms and keywords are tied to a specific language. If your site has both Ukrainian and Russian versions — add words separately for each language in the corresponding tab of the modal.

Method 2: Global synonym row

Suitable when you need two or more words to always mean the same thing across the entire catalog, regardless of the specific product.

Example: the queries "iron" and "flatiron" should show the same results throughout the store.

Where to configure it?

Search Settings → Synonym Row

Synonym Row section

How to add a synonym row?

  1. Click "Add"
  2. In the modal, choose a language
  3. In the "Word" field, enter the main word (e.g. iron)
  4. In the "Synonyms" field, enter a word → press Enter (e.g. flatiron)
  5. Add more synonyms if needed — each followed by Enter
  6. Click "Save"

Adding a synonym row

How does this work?

Synonyms in a row work in both directions. It doesn't matter which word is entered first ("Word") and which is in the "Synonyms" field — searching for either one returns the same results.

Do you need to add synonyms for every language?

No. Only add synonyms for the languages where it's actually needed.

Example: if search already finds a product well in Ukrainian, but has issues in Russian — it's enough to add a synonym row only for Russian.

When will synonyms start working?

Important

Synonym rows are applied only during product reindexing — not immediately after saving.

Reindexing frequency depends on your plan:

  • Basic plans — once a day
  • Higher plans — once an hour

If you just added a synonym — wait for the next update cycle.

How to choose good synonyms?

The main rule: accuracy matters more than coverage. If you're not sure a word fits — better not to add it.

✅ Do add:

  • Different spellings of the same word: vacuum cleaner, vaccum cleaner, hoover
  • Transliterations and translations: пилосос, Staubsauger
  • Real spelling mistakes that show up in search

❌ Don't add to the same row:

  • Different products of the same type — for example different fabrics (flannel, tweed, denim) aren't synonyms of each other, they're separate products
  • A general category instead of a specific product — fabric isn't a synonym of tweed
  • Homonyms with a different meaning — for example a "grater" (kitchen tool) shouldn't be confused with a colloquial term that has a different sense
Where to find ideas for synonyms?

Check the Analytics → Failed Queries section — it shows what customers searched for but found nothing. It's the most reliable source for expanding your synonyms.
