Failed Queries
Search queries that found no products. The most useful analytics section for increasing sales.
Where to find it?
Analytics → Overview → "Failed Queries" block → "View all"
What's shown?
For each query you can see:
- Query — exactly what the user searched for
- Language — the site's language version
- Count — how many times this query was entered
- % of all queries — its share of the total number of searches
How to read the data?
A failed query can mean one of two things:
The product isn't in the catalog — users are searching for something you don't carry. This is a signal to consider expanding your assortment.
The product exists, but search doesn't find it — the system doesn't recognize the query. Solution: add a synonym or keyword to the relevant product.
Relation to popular queries
Failed and popular queries aren't mutually exclusive. A query can be both popular and failed at the same time — meaning it's entered often, but finds nothing.
If a query is both popular and failed at the same time — that's a direct loss of sales. These queries should be addressed first.
What to do about failed queries?
- Check whether this product exists in your catalog
- Product exists → add a synonym or keyword to the product
- Product doesn't exist → consider adding it to your assortment
Address failed queries regularly — especially those with the largest share of all queries. Even a few added synonyms can noticeably impact conversion.
